The warm up curse struck again as Carus had to withdraw, but it was United who began the brighter, with Tooley winning the ball to feed Smith, who played in Diggins to give the A's an early lead.
A keen wind and a dry pitch presented a problem to both sides, as both teams gave possession away. The home side should have got back on terms when Roe hooked over from inside the box. Simpson beat Fisher for pace before driving the ball across the face of the goal.
Diggins gifted away possession but the Norwich based side couldn't capitalise before the Acle winger redeemed himself with a wonderful through ball to Tooley who fluffed his shot with 2-0 looking on the cards.
After a period of pressure Hellesdon levelled matters before they took the lead when Mann crashed the ball home from 8 yards out to lead 2-1 at the break.
Early in the second half Smith showed good skill to hold off his marker to present Tooley with a goal scoring chance, before a great through ball from Hogston to Smith saw the striker denied by the keeper.
Hurrell raced into the Acle box but was wide of the mark with his shot, before Hellesdon put clear water between the teams when capitalising on an offside call missed by the linesman to go 3-1 up.
Hogston set Smith free to finish well at 3-2 before the home side put the game beyond recall at 4-2 when a long throw was touched on for Mann to poke home.
Acle continued to look for a comeback goal but after a good run by Snelling, Diggins shot over.
So, the A's post-Christmas run gave manager Challen optimism for the new season and with a few additions, the Bridewell Lane club could well represent a challenge to all next season.
