Single Goal Defeat In Local Derby
Wymondham Town gained revenge on Acle United Women with a 1-0 victory at The FDC@Flegg on Sunday afternoon.
On a bitterly cold afternoon, Acle welcomed Birchall and Shields back into their starting line-up at the expense of Flatt who had recently signed for Ipswich Town and Mungham-Gray who was on the bench.
It was the home side with the slight wind advantage, which was blowing diagonally across the pitch, who mounted the first attack with Larkins setting Bullard free down the right flank but the cross into the box was blocked before being cleared. At the other end, Bell in the Acle goal was forced into a hurried clearance which went straight out for a throw-in.
However, in the 7th minute the visitors stunned the hosts by taking the lead. From a corner, Bell in the Acle goal appeared to be pushed or knocked from behind and falling to the ground with Fretwell the quickest to react to a loose ball scoring on the half-volley to put Wymondham 1-0 up.
Bullard was looking dangerous down the right wing and receiving a long ball from Todd beat her marker and crossed but no home player was able to get to the ball. Straight from the goal-kick it was the visitors turn to put the hosts under pressure with Bell saving from Nicholls and Larkins blocking the shot from the rebound before the ball was cleared.
Acle pushed forward looking for an equaliser and both Birchall and Pasque had attempts on goal saved by the keeper, but received a blow when Cooper had to leave the field injured to be replaced by Hoy. Then just before half-time, Pasque appeared to be bundled over going for a Larkins free-kick but referee Starkey waved play on as the visitors held a slender 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half started as the first ended with the hosts on the attack. Bullard firing over after receiving an inside ball from Todd, before appealing for another penalty when a Wymondham player handled the ball on the edge of the penalty area. However, the referee adjudged the handball was just outside the area and Birchall’s free-kick was gathered by the away keeper at the second attempt.
Another free-kick from the hosts saw the Wymondham defence head clear for a corner with Larkins
Set-piece headed just over by Pasque. At the other end, Bell saved well from Water before launching an attack which saw the away keeper save comfortably.
Midway through the half, a rash challenge by Basson on Acle’s Goodfield saw both players booked with Goodfield for squaring up to the Wymondham player as both teams upped the ante.
The home side continued to push forward despite an ever-increasing strengthening wind in their faces and both Birchall and Kindred had shots saved, before with 6 minutes remaining, their pressure finally paid off with in a penalty being awarded when Birchall was brought down by a defender. However, O’Callaghan guessed the right way to save Birchall’s spot-kick to retain the visitors lead.
In the dying minutes, Brister and Mungham-Gray were introduced by the hosts but the visitors had the better of the closing stages to secure all three points and avenge an earlier 1-0 defeat in October.
