Acle United Women returned from Southend with all three points after defeating Brentwood Town 4-1 to moved up to third in the league table.
On a blustery afternoon, the visitors kicked off with the wind in their favour as it was blowing diagonally across the pitch and put the hosts under pressure straight from the start. A long through ball from Scully put Bullard in the clear but her first touch was too heavy and the Brentwood keeper was able gather the ball. However, Bullard made amends 3 minutes later, heading home after Hoy’s cross was parried by the keeper.
Most of the early play was taking part in the Brentwood half and a sliced clearance from the home keeper went straight to Hoy, whose snap shot curled just wide of the far post. In a rare Brentwood attack, the hosts forced a corner which was headed clear by Larkins, then Parker made a good covering tackle from a quick counter attack.
Hoy was causing problems for the home defence and neat interplay between her and Kindred saw the latter fire just over the bar, before another Hoy cross led to Acle doubling their advantage with Brister scoring at the far post.
The visitors continued to push forward, with Rowlands threaded ball being deflected for a corner which was cleared to Kindred who won another corner. From Scully’s set-piece Parker headed just over the bar.
Hoy was the next to go close for the visitors, seeing her shot tipped around the post by the keeper, who collected the corner without being challenged.
Brentwood’s best spell of the half came just before half-time, with Bell in the Acle goal forced to make a good save to ensure Acle went into the break with a 2-goal cushion.
Within 2 minutes of the restart, Acle had increased their lead. Rowland past to Bullard, who backheeled the ball to Kindred whose low shot beat the keeper at her near post.
The hosts almost reduced the deficit with an hour played, but Larkins was on hand to clear the ball off the line with Bell beaten. As the half progressed the wind strengthened, with Acle now playing deeper in their own half. Despite this, the Acle back four of Larkins, Shields, Parker and Mungham-Gray were limiting the Brentwood chances of having shots at goal.
As the half progressed, Acle made substitutions with Barham firstly coming on and a little later Pasque entering the fray, at the expense of Kindred and Brister respectively.
A run through the centre from Larkins beating a couple of opponents caused panic in the home defence but the ball eventually was collected by the home keeper, however, 3 minutes later a similar run from Larkins, saw the Acle captain receive a return pass from Pasque and fire home over the keeper to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
Within a minute, the hosts reduced the deficit from a free-kick which evaded everybody to land up in the goal. Acle weathered all of the home attacks in the closing stages to run out comfortable 4-1 victors to reclaim third place in the league.
