Acle United Women were beaten 4-0 by top of the table and unbeaten Cambridge City on Sunday afternoon.
A depleted squad travelled to the Trinity College Sports ground to face Cambridge city having lost twice to their opponents both games being by the single goal.
After a quiet start to the game, it was the visitors who mounted the first real attack of the game with Hoy pressing down the left flank forcing City to concede a corner. However, the set-piece was collected by the home keeper.
Fullbrook in the Acle goal was forced to palmed away a dangerous cross and then save the rebound as the home side looked to open their account, before Hoy was on hand to clear another attack.
Both sides were cancelling each other out in midfield as they looked to gain the upper hand. Rowland was fouled 25 yards from goal, but Scully’s free-kick was straight at the keeper before a quick break by Acle from a City corner saw Bullard put away down the right wing, the ball eventually cleared by the hosts.
At the other end, a good move by Cambridge saw the ball cut inside but the resulting shot was narrowly wide of the post. Although both sides were committed to attacking most of the forward play was from Cambridge, however, neither keeper was forced into worthwhile saves.
Two attacks from City saw a shot deflected for a corner which was overhit and from another corner Fullbrook comfortably saved. At the other end, a good move from Acle saw Kindred set Bullard free but a good covering tackle cleared any danger.
The deadlock was finally broken in the final minute of the half when a free-kick was awarded close to the touchline and goalline. The set-piece cross going in off the far post to give the hosts a slender 1-0 lead at the break.
Cambridge dominated the early proceedings in the second half with Barham producing a good blocking tackle before Mungham-Gray cleared the ball out for a throw-in. However, the early pressure paid off when a speculative shot from a throw-in looped over Fullbrook to double the hosts lead.
Kindred battling up front took a knock to the head from a collision and continued after treatment, which saw Larkins free-kick into the City goal-area hacked away for a throw-in, Larkins was then called into action at the other end to produce a goal-line clearance after the bobbling ball had eluded Fullbrook.
Slowly Acle got back into the game and Cooper cut inside after receiving a long ball, but her goal bound shot was blocked, then Rowland’s cross to Cooper saw another shot blocked as the visitors looked to reduce the deficit.
All of Acle’s efforts were in vain when after a goalmouth scramble, City were able to score a third goal when the strike slid the ball home past Fullbrook.
Scully and Kindred both had shots saved in the closing minutes, as the visitors continued to push forward, but in the final minute Cambridge scored again to seal a 4-0 victory, which did not reflect the effort Acle put into the game.
