Acle Rue A Host Of Missed Chances
Acle United conceded an injury time equaliser to gift Norwich United under 21's their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw.
On another perfect playing surface, the A's welcomed back Sam Barham and Sam Brookes, but still had 3 first teamers off duty.
Acle were dominant in the early exchanges as Diggens crashed his free kick against the wall. At the other end Donnachie might have scored but his flick went wide of the post. Acle then cultivated a sweeping move from which Brook's shot was blocked for a corner.
Diggens lost his marker with some neat footwork, but then dragged his shot wide when he should have tested the keeper. Man of the match Colclough then took on one of his customary long throws to put United 1-0 up as Brooks nodded home. Colclough then played in Daniel Foreman with a quickly taken free kick who shot inches over the bar with the keeper well beaten.
Ralston then had a golden opportunity to level matters but couldn't find the target from 6 yards out. The young Norwich side were still well in the game, and it took a timely save by Scott Foreman to maintain the home side's advantage.
Acle doubled their lead when Colclough threw into the 6-yard box and this time it was Rob Telford who got on the end of things to create a healthy two goal advantage.
Acle began the second half well in charge and the busy Colclough saw his pile driver blocked by a defender. It took a brilliant run from Forbes to pull a goal back as he danced through the United defence before tucking the ball inside the post for 2-1.
Colclough then found Brooks who set up the lively Diggens but he was wide of the mark. Acle were attacking at will and created a host of opportunities, but the finishing was poor in a game that should have seen them out of sight. Foreman dinked in a free kick deflected wide.
Substitute Goodwin galloped clear but with just the keeper to beat shot wide. Diggins pulled the ball back for Barham but his shot was comfortably saved. Diggens then shot inches wide before a rare Norwich attack was called offside.
Two obvious fouls went unspotted by the official to the annoyance of the home supporters, and so it was left to Diggens to seal the deal with a glaring opportunity to score with the keeper on the ground, but wanting too much time his shot was cleared off the line.
Into injury time the referee gave another contentious free kick, and from the resultant cross, the ball fell to Rose, up from his own goal to gleefully prod the ball over the line to give Norwich a share of the points. Manager Challen was not happy to see so many chances go begging, in a match that the A's should have won with plenty to spare.
